JOshua Lanam, Executive Director
Joshua Lanam joined Vivace in 2016 as the organization’s first executive director. His diverse background ranges from non-profit management to choral conducting, theater directing, vocal performance, and elementary, middle, and high school music education.
A sacred choral and early music specialist, Joshua’s directing and teaching experience includes church music, elementary music using the Kodály philosophy, professional and high school musical theater, and jazz and marching bands. He has appeared in the lead tenor role in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and as a guest soloist with regional orchestras and choral societies in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Joshua served as a Lay Clerk and tenor soloist of the choir of Leeds Minster (England), where he performed daily services, sometimes sight reading complex vocal scores given to him minutes before performance.
Joshua is currently the associate music director, cantor, and tenor of the professional five-voice choir of St. Ann Chapel in Palo Alto, where he is responsible for conducting weekly services and rehearsals and scheduling service music in accordance with the liturgical calendar. He also regularly appears with Renaissance and Baroque chamber ensembles throughout the Bay Area.
Joshua earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the Conservatory of Music at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, where he studied choral conducting, vocal performance, and music pedagogy, including the Kodály philosophy. He studied opera performance and music theory at Goldsmiths College, University of London and choral conducting at Trinity College of Music. He earned a Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development Certificate from the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University and has completed business leadership courses through employer-sponsored programs.
Along with his wife, musicologist and organist Faith Lanam, and their two poodles, he is a proud resident of San José and enjoys traveling, hiking, kayaking, and making music.
Henry Gardella, Program Coordinator
Vivace alumnus and San Jose native Henry Gardella holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Puget Sound. While at UPS, Henry studied piano with Dr. Tanya Stambuk and became the de facto director’s assistant to the non-auditioned university choir. As a pianist, he has frequently accompanied and performed with professional and amateur instrumentalists. He also served as Vice President of Finance and Vice President of Communications to the Puget Sound Chapter of Beta Theta Pi, helping restore their charter in 2017.
Henry has a diverse range of interests, from entrepreneurship to architecture to psychology to literature. However, since beginning choir at age six and piano at age seven, music has proved a foundational bedrock. Henry has been with Vivace since its second year, and he looks forward to many more years of song!
