Frequently Asked Questions?

VIVACE is –
a quality, well-rounded choral music program for children between the ages of 6 and 14 who live in and around the San Jose
area. Our goal is to give children the tools to sing in tune and the ability to read music, while learning the basics of good
vocal technique. We use a diverse and engaging repertoire, ranging from folk-based music to classical.
Vivace completed its first season in the spring of 2004. Along with two formal concerts each season, performances have
included an Advent Tea, an appearance on the Oak Grove After School Concert Series, a performance at the San Jose
Museum of Art and at the San Jose Children's Discovery Museum. In addition, Vivace’s Concert Choir performed with The
Peninsula Women’s Chorus, at the Silicon Valley Arts Coalition Fundraiser gala, and participated in the Choral Friendship
Day in Livermore.  The Vivace Founding Board represents a group of dedicated parents who have joined with Director,
Peggy Spool to build VIVACE – a strong and vital chorus for San Jose youth.

Among all the after school activities available, why choose a chorus?:

A choral setting is an excellent way for a child to gain a musical education The development of music skills help bring
success in many other areas of a child's education and development.  In Vivace a child not only learns to use his / her voice
as an instrument, but also as a part of an ensemble.  The chorus "team" is a wonderful social setting, promoting friendships
and cooperative behaviour.  Using the Kodaly method, singers in the chorus also study music theory, sight singing and ear
training.  Vivace graduates will have a full appreciation for different styles of music, and will take their skills wherever they
go in life.

Where does the tuition go?

Highly trained staff are needed to make the experience really work. Unlike many after school activities, community
youth choruses are compared to, a quality chorus cannot be directed or taught by volunteers.  The cost of music, rent,
insurance are some of the many expenses of a community chorus.Vivace is one of the less expensive programs of its
kind in the Bay Area, set so because we felt strongly that we wanted to bring this experience to every child we could.

Is Vivace Youth Chorus of San Jose a Non-Profit?

Vivace was Incorporated in the State of California as a non-profit and has 501 C(3) Non-Profit Status.
Contributions to Vivace Youth Chorus are tax deductible up to the amount allowed by law.
